Evens Ferdilus

XXXXXXXX - Click for larger imageEvens Ferdilus is not what you would call a prolific painter. By his own admission, he has painted far fewer than a hundred works between 1994 and now. Yet, his sense of perfection has resulted in a work ethic that pushed him to make every one of his paintings as successful as possible.

That dedication also allowed him to achieve a style that is coherent, original and colorful. Using the theme of Environment as the focal point of his works, Ferdilus paints with dark, cold, blues and greens and lugubrious reds, social and natural problems that area as as Haitian as the red and blue flag. His images combine semi-realistic faces or body parts with all sorts of everyday objects and imaginary shapes sharing space and even volume in a manner reminiscent of the incongrous volumes of Escher: A guitar would all of a sudden twist and transform itself into a 2-dimensional bridge. In many works, he uses shreds of paint that peel off to reveal another space or another time. Yet, those are no simple artifice for they contribute in reinforcing the idea of the work.

Ferdilus' work gives something of an impression of Dali, but with more chaos and irrationality. His dreamscapes are not meant to be pleasant for the most part but rather to inspire, puzzle, encourage puzzling, and in some cases, cause alarm. Ferdilus cites among his chief influences, Jean-René Jérome and Rose-Marie Desruisseaux, but no Salvador Dali. Evens Ferdilus has great hopes for Haitian art that he considers underappreciated or falsely represented.

With no further words, let's go the gallery for some of Ferdilus' paintings.
